Kyrgios Eases Into Round 2

Nick Kyrgios started off the Japan Open in style, breezing past Chun-Hsin Tseng in straight sets.

The World no. 20 dropped just seven points on his serve, saved the only break points that he faced and won 86% (25 of 29) points on the back of his first delivery to beat the Taipei player 6-3, 6-1 in 67 minutes.

The Aussie, who fell out of the top 100 after beginning the year as World no. 93, has climbed back the rankings. He improved to 36-10 in 2022 following the first round win.

Kyrgios won his only title of the year in Washington and reached his maiden Grand Slam final in Wimbledon.

A win on Thursday, will put the 27-year-old in his ninth quarterfinal of the season.

Majchrzak Ousts Qualifier Shimabukuro

World no. 121 Kamil Majchrzak knocked out Japanese qualifier Sho Shimabukuro 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the first round.

A Sofia Open quarterfinalist last week, Majchrzak wasn’t broken in the match as he saved both the break points that he faced. He too had five breaking opportunities in the match and he capitalised on 2 of them to win the match in an hour and 26 minutes.

Majchrzak is 17-14 going into the second round in Japan. The Pole has featured in three quarterfinals this year, finishing as semifinalist in Pune.

Can he shock Kyrgios in Round 2 and reach the last eight for the fourth time this year?
