Taylor Fritz v Nick Kyrgios Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came earlier this season in Cincinnati and Fritz had won that one in straight sets.

Fritz Showing Good Form Despite Illness

Fritz had spent the whole of last week in bed as he recovered from Covid in Seoul. It was only in the wee hours of the Wednesday morning that Fritz flew to Tokyo and carved out a victory over James Duckworth before his second round match the very next day against Hiroki Moriya.

And while Moriya also took Fritz to three sets in over two hours, the American would be pleased with his effort to have made it to the last eight so quickly after his illness.

The trouble is, at the best of times it’s difficult enough to take on an opponent like Kyrgios, especially if he is firing on all cylinders.

With Fritz having suffered from Covid last week, and flown to Tokyo and played two matches in two days, there will be an element of exhaustion that could come into this.

Can he overcome that and Kyrgios’ form here?

Kyrgios Overcomes Set Deficit

It was expected to be a far easier win than it finally turned out but Nick Kyrgios will be reasonably satisfied to have returned from his post-US Open break and made the quarterfinal.

Kyrgios registered a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Kamil Majchrzak in his second round match, following on from his opening round rout of Chun Hsin Tseng. The match lasted an hour and 23 minutes.

Firing 23 aces in the encounter, Kyrgios was broken once in the match and that came in his very first service game as he looked to get his rhythm going. And while he could get that break back – the Aussie did not even earn a break-point in the opening set – he slowly returned to his best over the next two sets.

Eight break-points yielded four breaks of serves before the Aussie came away a winner against Majchrzak and set up this meeting with the higher-ranked American. Can he avenge the Cincinnati loss?

Fritz v Kyrgios Prediction and Tip

Fritz, on paper, could have been a favourite but given the aforementioned circumstances, we are backing Kyrgios to win this.
