Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Radu Albot Head to Head
The two players have never met on the tour prior to this encounter.
Tsonga’s Second Semifinal of the Season
The Frenchman has been in an impeccable form this season, especially considering that last year he battled with injuries and dropped out of the top 200. It wasn’t a season that any professional would want to incur at that age, but Tsonga’s ability to come out of it healthy and fit is something truly commendable.
Tsonga has now made it to the semifinal in Montpellier for the third consecutive year. He defeated the sixth seed Jeremy Chardy in the quarterfinal while displaying a great deal of resilience. It was a three-set affair that Tsonga ultimately won with 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 6-4.
He is slowly starting to display the skills that took him through to 16 singles titles on the tour. Earlier this season, he played in Brisbane where he reached the final four but lost to Daniil Medvedev. In the Australian Open, he met Novak Djokovic in the second round and there wasn’t a lot that he could do against the Serbian.
His last title was the European Open back in 2017.
Can Albot go the Distance Here?
Radu Albot is a player who spent most of his time last year playing on the Challenger circuit. He did have some luck there although, he failed to bring that momentum to the ATP Tour.
There was an exception to this, however, and it came in Metz. He reached the semifinal there but lost to Gilles Simon. He also reached the third round at the Wimbledon. As for his performance in Montpellier, it has been nothing short of brilliant.
In the first round, he defeated the fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber following which, he moved past Ernests Gulbis. In the third round, he met the Cyprian qualifier Marcos Baghdatis whom he defeated in straight sets.
The Moldova-born player has never won a singles title on the tour.
