Taylor Fritz v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

There have been five previous encounters between these players including one at the Davis Cup and Shapovalov leads 4-1. Over the last two matches, both of which came in 2021, it’s 1-1.

All the matches have come on hard court surfaces.

Fritz Benefits from Kyrgios Withdrawal

Fritz was a second-favourite going into his quarterfinal against Nick Kyrgios by some way which is why there might be some relief when his Aussie opponent pulled out of the tournament before their match.

It was Kyrgios’ left knee which became a problem for him but proved to be beneficial to Fritz’s chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals as he advanced to the last four stage.

The American had struggled to win both his first two rounds, having recovered from Covid just in time to take to court for the first round here against James Duckworth. He needed three sets against both Duckworth and Hiroki Moriya and a third successive encounter in as many days could have sapped a lot of energy out of him.

An extra day’s rest should help Fritz going into this encounter.

Shapovalov Makes it Past Coric

A finalist at the Korea Open last week, Shapovalov registered his third straight-set win to make it to the semifinal here. This time around it was the in-form Borna Coric who had to bear the brunt of Shapovalov’s fury.

The Canadian player clinched his last four spot with a 6-4, 6-3 win in an hour and 18 minutes against Coric.

Slamming nine aces, Shapovalov missed a chance to serve out the first set at 5-3 but then broke Coric again in the very next game to take the lead. The second set was a lot more streamlined for the world number 22 as he dropped just three points on serve to carve out a win.

Can he now make it to his second final in a row – and of the season as well?

Fritz v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

Fritz will welcome that day’s break but Shapovalov’s red-hot form makes him the favourite here. Backing him to even win this in straight sets.
