Marta Kostyuk v Jasmine Paolini
A very interesting matchup awaits us in round one of the Transylvania open. Two players who like to hit the ball hard will go head to head as Kostyuk takes on Paolini. They played once so far with Kostyuk winning that match in Cincinnati a few months ago.
She’s the better talent overall as she’s expected to become a top 10 player one day with Paolini doing what she can with her talent. The Italian is a fierce competitor and rarely gives matches away so Kostyuk can certainly expect a proper battle here.
Neither has played that well recently with some solid results but nothing spectacular. Paolini is the better clay player with Kostyuk the better hard-court player and that should give the Ukrainian a slight edge in this one. She is a bit inconsistent with her play but I’ll trust her to win.
Tip: Kostyuk to win: 4/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Daria Kasatkina v Leylah Fernandez
A very interesting matchup awaits us in San Diego with Kasatkina taking on Fernandez. It’s a matchup between two different styles of play and that makes it fascinating to break down. We’ve seen it before this year as they played in Rome and Kasatkina won that match.
Of course, the Russian is the far better clay player so that’s hardly surprising but on hard courts, this matchup is much closer. It will come down to how Fernandez plays. Her best should bat the best of Kasatkina and the Russian has not been playing her best in a while.
Fernandez hasn’t played since the US Open so her rhythm will be off as well. All in all, it’s going to be close but I do think that Kasatkian should win. She won in San Jose not that long ago and that’s a fairly similar climate and condition to here. The biggest issue for Leylah will be the lack of playing time recently.
Tip: Kasatkina to win: 8/15 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Liudmila Samsonova v Bianca Andreescu
This is one hell of a matchup for many reasons. Samsonova has been one of the best players in recent months winning a couple of events, especially in North America. A return there will be good for her as she took some time off since her last event but also played a match in the qualifiers.
She will have a far better understanding of what to expect her compared to Andreescu who hasn’t looked as sharp as Sasmonvoa has. They never played before either so that’s another thing that complicates this quite a bit. The Russian has been the better player this year, especially lately.
She has all the tools to trouble Andreescu and being in better rhyme and actually playing in the last month will be a huge bonus for her. Confidence is something Andreescu don’t lack but it could only take her so far. Take the Russian in this one.
Tip: Samsonova to win: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
