A fourth round appearance at the US Open should have been a potential for Riske to end the season on a high but things have gone awry for her since then.
She lost that match at Flushing Meadows in straight sets to Caroline Garcia before falling to Anastasia Gasanova and Claire Liu in the first rounds of the tournaments which followed. What makes it worse is Riske lost both those without winning a set.
The world number 29 now enters this tournament in San Diego with a hope she can get back to her strong ways which had already seen her make it to the final of two WTA events and display strong showings at a couple of others.

Chirico Makes it Through the Qualifiers
Chirico has found a lot of her success on the ITF circuit in recent times despite being ranked 58th at one stage in her career.
Today, she is 195th on the WTA charts and will be making a rare main draw appearance at the highest level and that has been down to her showing in the qualifiers.
In both her matches, Chirico had started off a second favourite but came through to enter the first round. She first shocked Yulia Putintseva in the first qualifying round before dropping just four games in her demolition of Ashlyn Krueger in the second.
And now she faces an opponent who has been slightly vulnerable on court in recent times. Can Chirico make it a third upset in a row?

Riske is 2/5 to win this but at the same time it might not be the easiest for her given the sharply descent in her confidence levels from her recent levels. Expecting a three-setter in this one.
