Fabio Fognini v Manuel Guinard Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will the first match between the 36-year old Italian, and the Frenchman, who is a decade younger.

Fognini will probably be glad if the season ended tomorrow, because the Italian has experienced a largely forgettable year on tour.

The highlight was probably reaching the semi-final in Rio back in February, a feat he emulated in Belgrade two months later.

Since then, though, there have been a string of early exists from tournaments, and he has not been beyond the second round stage of any tournament that he has entered.

He did at least make the second round at the US Open, beating Aslan Karatsev in the process, but his run was ended then by Rafael Nadal.

In his last match, he was beaten in the first round in Sofia by the Australian world number 134, Aleksandar Vukic.

Guinard Beats Spanish Opposition in Qualifying

Guinard reached a highest career ranking earlier this summer, largely on the back of winning a Challenger title on clay in Italy in March.

That was just his second final at that level, the other ending in defeat on home soil last June.

He made his Grand Slam debut at the French Open as a wildcard, but was beaten in the first round by Cameron Norrie in straight sets.

Subsequent attempts to qualify for Wimbledon and the US Open both ended in first round failure.

However, he has enjoyed better fortune in Northern Spain this week.

First be beat Eduardo Esteve Lobato of Spain in straight sets in the first round of qualifying, and then came from a set down to defeat Lobato’s compatriot Nikolas Sanchez Izquirdo to earn himself a tie with Fognini,

Despite the Italian’s recent indifferent form, he will still back himself to beat a man making only his second main draw appearance of the year.
