Caroline Garcia has been the in-form player for the season and is currently fifth in the race to make the WTA Finals. Unsurprisingly she was the favourite going into her opening round match here against Danielle Collins but it turned out to be a rather easy win for the latter in the end.
In a match lasting an hour and a half, Collins clinched a place in the second round with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory that was her first since her fourth round appearance at the US Open.
Collins broke her opponent in the very first game of the opening set and then doubled her advantage before pocketing the set.
The second set began in similar fashion before Garcia finally drew level at 2-2. Collins broke again to go 4-2 up, lost serve at 4-3 and then shared another service breaks to make it 5-5.
In the tie-breaker that followed, however, Collins never fell behind and converted it off her only match-point.

Trevisan Overcomes Osorio
Wins have been at a premium for Trevisan in recent times and she was a second-favourite by some distance coming up against the Colombian qualifier Maria Osorio.
Rather surprisingly, Trevisan managed to get past Osorio in straight sets to carve out a place in the second round following a six-match run in which she had won just one match.
In an encounter lasting an hour and 24 minutes and one that saw a whopping 13 breaks of serves, Trevisan won 6-3, 6-4. It was an indicator of how poorly the two players served that both players lost more points on serve than they won.
It was Trevisan’s 26 points from 56 opportunities on serves that pipped her opponent’s 23 from 60 to see her through to the next round.
The Italian will need to do a lot better if she wants to find herself with a win against Collins.

While Trevisan might have won in straight sets, that was down to her opponent’s horrible serving in round one. Collins should have no such woes and clinch a place in the second round.
