Winning Return from Davis Cup for Murray

Murray had given a good account of himself at the US Open when he reached the third round and then put up a strong showing against Matteo Berrettini before bowing out in four sets.

Since then he has been a part of one singles match at the Davis Cup and then participated in the Laver Cup before entering this tournament at Gijon. Murray went down fighting to Alex de Minaur at Roger Federer’s swansong competition before registering an easy win over Dmitry Popko for Great Britain.

Here in Gijon, Murray took down Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets, winning 7-5, 6-2 to seal his second round berth for the third tournament in a row. That will come as a bit of a relief for Murray who had earlier been ousted in his openers at both, the Washington Open and Montreal Masters.

Can he now make it two in two?

Cachin Overpowers Vatutin

Going into his first round match against Alexey Vatutin as a 3/5 favourite, Cachin lived up to that billing by overcoming a tight first set and clinching an easy second one.

In a match lasting an hour and 25 minutes, Cachin dismantled the Russian qualifier 7-6 (2), 6-0 to set up this meeting with Murray.

Cachin was the first to drop serve in the seventh game but from there on it was all one-way traffic. He broke right back before racing off to a 5-0 lead in both, the tie-breaker that followed and the second set.

What’s been interesting to see is this was Cachin’s first ATP match since reaching the third round at the US Open. Can he now make it his fourth win of the season, having earlier also reached round two at Roland Garros?

Murray v Cachin Prediction and Tip

Murray is 1/5 to win this but will be wary of Cachin’s recent form and not just on clay – which is his favourite surface. Expecting a fighting encounter in which Murray goes through to the next round.
