Francisco Cerundulo v Dominic Thiem Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will the first match between the 24-year old Argentine, and the Austrian, who is five years older.

Cerundulo Ends Losing Streak

Although Cerundulo is now a top 30 player, he came into this tournament in the middle of a slump, not having won a main tour match since July.

However, having been given a first round bye, he was able to consign that bad run to history with a straight sets win over the French qualifier Manuel Guinard, who had ended the hopes of Fabio Fognini in the first round.

Both men had already had to save break points by the time that the Argentine was broken midway through the first set. However, he immediately responded with a break of his own, and, with nothing more to separate them, it went to a tie-break.

That could have gone either way, but Cerundulo was the man who won it.

Guinard was now the one under pressure, and he had already saved three more break points by the time he dropped his serve again in the second set.  He was soon serving to stay in the match but the feat proved beyond him, and the number four seed was in the quarter-finals.

Thiem on the Recovery Trail Still

Thiem has found it much harder than he might have expected to come back from the wrist injury that kept him out of the sport for the best part of a year, and has not yet got back to the level that saw him win the US Open in 2020 and reach three more Grand Slam finals.

However, finishing runner-up in a Challenger event last month provided some encouragement to the Austrian, and he has been able to build on that in Gijon having gained entry to the main draw based on his Protected Ranking.

Certainly he had no problems in then first round, beating the Portuguese number one Joao Sousa for the loss of just two games/

The world number 62, Marcos Giron presented more of a challenge, and it was the American who started the stronger, in an error strewn first set, which he took having made fewer mistakes.

Break points came and went in the second set, but Giron was the first to drop his serve, only to immediately break back.  He then had a break point which would have put him in control of the match, could not take it, and was immediately made to regret that when Thiem broke him again to take the match into a third set.

That seemed to demoralise the American and Giron was able to breeze through the third set without dropping a game.

Cerundulo v Thiem Prediction and Tip

Under normal circumstances, Thiem might have been expected to be favourite for this match. However, he is still in the recovery phase after his long injury lay-off, and is playing an opponent who has just ended his losing run. The Argentine may just be too strong for him just now.
