Andrey Rublev v Tommy Paul Head to Head

Rublev leads 3-1. While the Russian won the first three meetings, Paul won the latest meeting at Indian Wells last year.

Top seed Andrey Rublev held off a strong challenge from Ilya Ivashka in the second round of the Gijon Open on Thursday to reach the last eight stage.

After a two-hour-and-28-minute contest, the Russian knocked out the Belarusian 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

The World no. 9 struck 10 aces and 51 winners in the match against Ivashka’s solitary ace and 13 winners. Rublev was the only one to break in the first set and he also build a 4-2 lead in the second, but the World no. 70 came back by breaking the Russian twice and tying the match at a set apiece.

In the decider, Rublev got a break in the seventh game and then held on to the lead to advance.

An 11-time champion on the tour, Rublev won titles in Marseille, Dubai and Belgrade this season. Most recently he was a semifinalist in Astana last week. Can he reach the final four for a ninth time in 2022?

Paul Knocks Out Another Local Player

Facing Rublev in the quarters will be fifth seed Tommy Paul, who battled past Spanish qualifier Nicolas Alvarez Varona in the second round on Wednesday.

The American, who didn’t have much trouble in dispatching 16-year-old Spanish debutant Martin Landaluce in the first round, needed an hour and 53 minutes to oust Varona 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Paul began he second round well, taking a 3-0 lead in the opening set thanks to a double break. But Varona got a break back. However, a third break in the set sealed it for Paul.

The second set was much closer, with the World no. 231 breaking in the very first game. He had two set points on Paul’s serve in the ninth game, but the latter saved both and then broke the Spaniard to love in the next game to draw level.

The momentum had shifted towards the American and he dominated the tiebreak to progress in the tournament. This is the ninth time he has clinched a quarterfinal spot this year, can he advance to a second semifinal?

Rublev v Paul Prediction and Tip

Although he was beaten by Paul in their last meeting, Rublev has a superior record against the American. The top seed also has a better record in prevailing in high pressure matches. He will be looking to go deep once again and is expected to oust Paul on Friday.
