Korda Ends Murray’s Run

In a match that swung from one end to the other, Sebastian Korda edged out Andy Murray in three sets to book a place in the semifinals of the Gijon Open.

The World no. 47 struck 43 winners to Murray’s 25 and won 29 of 40 net points on his way to a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory in two hours and 28 minutes. This was the second straight three-set win for the American.

Korda had rallied from a set down to defeat third seed Roberto Bautista Agut 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a two-hour-and-45-minute second-round contest. The 22-year-old had struck 53 winners in that match against the Spaniard.

He had a comfortable win in the first round though, ousting another Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-4, 6-1.

Korda improved his season record to 29-19. This is just the second time he has reached the semifinal this year. Earlier he had lost in the final four stage in Estoril.

The 27-year-old French saved two match points on his serve at 4-5 in the final set and then saved seven in the dramatic tiebreaker, before converting his sixth match point of the tiebreak and winning the deciding set in an hour and 36 minutes.

The World no. 56 served 14 aces and struck 55 winners in the match. He won a total of 106 points in the match, five fewer than Carreno Busta, but still managed to oust the World no. 15.

The Frenchman, who was a quarterfinalist in his previous two tournaments in Metz and Tel Aviv, will be featuring in a third tour-level semifinal of the season on Saturday. He had reached his maiden career final in Adelaide-2 and lost in the final four stage in Doha. Can the 27-year-old reach a second career final?

Korda v Rinderknech Prediction and Tip

Korda may not have reached too many quarterfinals and semifinals this year, but overall he has been in decent form and has taken down some big names throughout the year.

In this tournament too, the American has beaten Roberto Bautista Agut and Andy Murray. So he will be the favourite. He will also be the fresher of the two players as Rinderknech played out a mentally and physically draining contest on Friday. So overall, expect Korda to advance.
