Belinda Bencic v Leylah Fernandez Head to Head

It is advantage Fernandez with 2-0; they last met in the 2022 French Open, where the young Canadian won in three sets.

Bencic Testing a Coaching Change

Ahead of the season’s final WTA 1000 event in Guadalajara, Belinda Bencic was seen practising with Dmitry Tursunov over the weekend. The Russian has previously worked with high-profile stars like Aryna Sabalenka, Anett Kontaveit, and Emma Raducanu.

The partnership will be put to test this week in Mexico, where the Swiss is hoping to bag enough points so she can qualify for the year-end WTA Finals in Texas.

Theoretically, Bencic’s chances depend on a deep run – combined with early exits by other seeded stars. Given her pedigree, it is not too big of an ask.

Most recently, Belinda, currently ranked World No. 15, was a semifinalist in Tallinn and later withdrew from her second-round bout in Ostrava earlier this month.

Her season record stands at an impressive 37-17, which includes a title from Charleston, runner-up silverware in Berlin, and a semifinal showing in the Miami Open. The 25-year-old, who is also an Olympic Gold medalist, has beaten several top 10 players over her illustrious career.

Fernandez, Low on Form

2022 has been a learning curve for the young Leylah Fernandez, who is set to compete in the tournament with hardly any momentum. She is 18-12, with her most noticeable result coming in Monterrey, where she won the title.

The 20-year-old has visibly struggled in her last few tournaments, managing just two wins in four events. Her last stint was in San Diego where she succumbed to Daria Kasatkina in the opener. Before that, Fernandez endured a similar fate against Liudmila Samsonova in the US Open.

That said, Leylah can surprise as time and again, she has punched above her weight. She has already beaten Bencic twice in her career, and as last year’s US Open finalist, she cannot be undermined.

Of course, she will need to improve her game and bring her best foot forward.

Bencic v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

This match is Bencic’s to lose, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it doesn’t go her way from the beginning. Fernandez is a fierce player and her southpaw may make things difficult for her adversary. Expect a cracking affair.
