Diego Schwartzman v David Goffin Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings on the ATP tour between these two and Goffin leads 2-1 on head to head. This includes an Antwerp Open victory in 2016 for the Belgian player.

Two other matches were played between them, at the Davis Cup and the Laver Cup and Goffin won them both too.

Schwartzman in Bit of a Disarray

While Schwartzman has had a couple of reasonable results come his way earlier in the season, also having made the third round at the Cincinnati Masters and US Open, he enters this match on the back of some struggles.

A third round exit at the US Open to Frances Tiafoe in straight sets, has been followed by defeats in Davis Cup, Laver Cup and then an opening loss at the Tel Aviv Open to Arthur Rinderknech.

Schwartzman’s struggles have been real, especially on surfaces outside of clay where he holds a measely 12-13 win-loss record for this season.

He had a bye in the first round here and is now coming up against a player who has himself seen some struggles. Playing in a hardcourt tournament, however, things even out considerably given his own issues on it.

Goffin Almost Shocked in Opener

Gilles Arnaud Bailly’s career-best ranking is 1171st in the world. You read that right, it’s a four-digit rank and he was playing in this opening round fixture after getting a wildcard.

That he started out at 9/1 odds against Goffin was no surprise but that did not seem to bother him. Or may be it bothered Goffin a little as well as the 58th-ranked player needed more than three hours to get past Bailly.

Goffin won 7-6 (7), 5-7, 6-4 after losing his serve five times from the five opportunities his opponent got. He also broke Bailly five times with the difference between the two lying in the first set tie-breaker where he overcame a set-point and needed four of his own to clinch the win.

Against Schwartzman, Goffin will need to do a lot better on his second serve in which he won just 42% of his points.

Schwartzman v Goffin Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be a stiff one with neither player going in with a huge advantage. Expecting a three-setter here.
