Dominic Thiem v Francisco Cerundulo Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, and that was just last week in the quarter-finals in Gijon, Thiem winning in straight sets.

Thiem will be the first to admit that it has taken him longer than he might have hoped to get over his long injury lay-off, and will be looking towards the close season as a chance to work on his fitness more.

However, reaching the semi-finals in Gijon last week would have done him a power of good, and he was able to carry that form into his opening round match with the local wildcard Michael Geerts.

The first set was closely contested and went with serve, until the Belgian, ranked 268th in the world was broken for the first time.

But from there it became a procession, as the Austrian swept through the second set without dropping a game and Geerts had to be satisfied with the occasional point.

Cerundulo’s Disappointing Run

It has been a fine season for Cerundulo who has built on the progress that he made in 2021 to become a top 30 player.

His season began with a Challenger win in Bolivia, and then he gained his first victory on the main tour at the Swedish Open in July.

He also proved that he was more than just a clay court player by reaching the semi-final of the Miami Masters.

Results recently, though, have not been so impressive, and he had not won a main tour match since reaching the semi-finals in Hamburg back in July before that run to the last eight in Gijon.
