Frances Tiafoe v Mikael Ymer Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Ymer leads their head to head series by two matches to one.

Tiafoe won their first match during the NextGen ATP finals of 2019, but both their subsequent matches, in Auckland in 2020, and at Winston Salem the following year, were won by Ymer.

Tiafoe Prevents Family Reunion

For much of the match between Tiafoe and Elias Ymer, the prospect of an all Swedish clash between the two Ymer brothers loomed large.

Wildcard Elias, who had beaten the German Oscar Otte in the fist round, had started the better, and had taken the first set after securing the only service break.

When the Swede raced into a four love lead in the second set, the match seemed as good as over. But Tiafoe slowly worked his way back into contention, got one of the breaks back and then the other one.

It went to a tie break, which the American subsequently won.

The third set went with serve, with very little to choose between them. It all came down to a tie-break, but, unfortunately for the Swedish crowd, the local man could not stir himself for one final effort, and his cause was lost.

Ymer Knocks Out Defending Champion

Ymer has made it through to the last eight, much to the delight of the Stockholm crowd who feared, that, at one stage, he would not get beyond the first round when he found himself a set down to Quentin Halys of France.

However, he managed to rally and come from behind to win in that match, and he took his game to another level against Tommy Paul of the USA, the number eight seed, and defending champion, in their second round match in Thursday.

He was in the ascendancy early, breaking Paul in his opening service game, and, although the American recovered the break, he dropped his serve again immediately, and then once more.

Paul looked like he had found a way back into the match when he broke Ymer at the start of the second set.  But he immediately surrendered that advantage by dropping his own serve again, and then once more.

Paul did save a match point on his own serve but it was only delaying the inevitable, as Ymer served out next game.

Tiafoe v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Based on his world ranking Tiafoe will start the slight favourite, but Ymer might have family revenge on his mind and, backed by the home crowd, will push him close.
