Pegula, in a Superb Form
Jessica Pegula, currently ranked World No. 5, has been in a scintillating form of late. Including the ongoing Guadalajara Open, the 28-year-old has reached the quarterfinal in her last five tournaments.
This week’s journey saw her beat Elena Rybakina in the opener with 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(10) – saving an incredible three match points in the process. Her next match was relatively straightforward as she beat Bianca Andreescu 6-4, 6-4.
Pegula’s tryst with absolute consistency began in the Rogers Cup, where she reached the semis, followed by quarterfinal stints in Cincinnati and New York, and then the semis again in San Diego. Through these events, she surpassed a handful of big names like Petra Kvitova, Madison Keys, and Emma Raducanu.
With the runner-up trophy from the Madrid Open and three Grand Slam quarterfinal showings, Jessica is now 39-18 in 2022. She is also set to compete in the WTA Finals soon.

Stephens on a Roll in Guadalajara
Sloane Stephens is enjoying her time in the Mexican city, having improved her record here to 8-0 in 2022.
The last time she was here, she won the title, albeit it was the 250 edition of the event. It was her first singles trophy in four years and came when she struggled with form.
Perhaps, Guadalajara is where Stephens will redeem herself again.
This week, she has already left in her wake a list of formidable stars. In the opener, she dispatched the Czech teenage prodigy Linda Fruhvirtova 6-0, 6-2. In the next match, she beat the in-form Swiss Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-4, and followed it with another straight-set win over the mighty Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia.
The last time Sloane beat so many big names in a tournament was in 2018 when she made it to the final of the Miami Open, French Open, Canadian Open, and WTA Finals.
Now ranked World No. 50, the 29-year-old has improved her record to 18-16 and will compete in her first quarterfinal since the French Open in May.
Pegula v Stephens Prediction and Tip
While Pegula is the odds-on favourite here, Stephens will fancy her chances of causing an upset. As a two-time Grand Slam finalist and winner of numerous titles, her pedigree is strong and enviable – certainly on par with Pegula’s. Expect a cracking affair.
