Sakkari Edges Past Collins
Staying in the race for the WTA Finals, Maria Sakkari fired warning shots on Thursday when she knocked out the spirited American Danielle Collins 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Starting with a bye into round two, the Greek had previously beaten Marta Kostyuk in straight sets.
In what has been a superb season for Sakkari – which saw her reach the top 10 in the rankings and peak at the #3 spot before landing the 6th position currently – she will now look forward to reaching the prestigious year-end finals in Texas.
While Maria has not bagged a singles title this season, she was the runner-up in St. Petersburg, Indian Wells, and Parma. Besides this, she also reached the semifinal in Dubai and the quarterfinal in Rome.
After losing her opening-round bouts in San Diego and Ostrava most recently, Sakkari finds herself in a tricky position to stay afloat in the competition. Given that she is no stranger to shock upsets at the hands of lower-ranked players, Kudermetova, who is in far better form, will fancy her chances.

Kudermetova Marches On
It was business as usual for Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova, who dispatched Jelena Ostapenko in round three after beating Donna Vekic in her opener.
With these wins, she is now 39-19 and ranked World No. 12 – a career-best ranking for her.
Kudermetova arrived in Mexico on the heels of consecutive semifinal appearances in Tokyo and Monastir – which was also preceded by a fourth-round showing in the US Open.
As for her pedigree this year, she has three runner-up trophies from Melbourne, Dubai, and Istanbul. On the doubles circuit, she won the Dubai Championships and Italian Open, alongside reaching the final in Qatar, Miami, and Den Bosch.
With plenty of experience and tennis to go around – statistically more than Sakkari (35-21) in 2022 – there is no reason why she can’t beat her Greek adversary.

The stakes are high as the winner gets to compete in the WTA Finals in 10 days’ time. It can swing either way, but Kudermetova has the advantage owing to her superior form. That said, anything can happen.
