Hubert Hurkacz – Frances Tiafoe
A bomb of a round-one matchup awaits us in Vienna where Indoor specialist Hubert Hurkacz takes on last year’s finalist Frances Tiafoe. What the American was doing last year in the Austrian capital was tennis rhapsody as he hit a level that was only ever matched by his US Open performances this year.
He did lose the magic in the final losing to Zverev but his return will get him many fan chants as he truly was a favourite last year. They played four times so far with both players winning twice. The most recent one was played last year and Hurkacz won that easily.
The American did not look very well last week in Stockholm and it remains to be seen whether he can find his Vienna form again but I do think he’ll put forward a very good showing. Hurkacz will be good as well so it’s the perfect chance to back the over.
Tip: Over 21,5 games: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Denis Shapovalov v Jurij Rodionov
This matchup doesn’t look particularly interesting unless you know the backstory of it. These players played in Vienna two years ago and Rodionov stunned SHapovalov in that match leaving him fuming as he left the court. The Canadian certainly remembers that one and he’ll want to see out revenge.
However, it will be very tricky because Rodionov has a powerful serve that can be tricky to handle in these conditions. The serve is what won the match last time they played each other and I think it will be another close one. Don’t expect the Austrian to fold on native soil.
Don’t expect Shapovalov to smash him easily either because there will always be a reason to doubt him until he finally plays one month where his level remains at a fairly high level. He’s far too up and down to even remotely be considered consistent and the over is good value.
Tip: Over 21,5 games: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
Dominic Thiem v Tommy Paul
Another brilliant round one in Vienna awaits us on Tuesday with hometown hero Thiem taking on Tommy Paul. This is a pretty good matchup because they are on a similar level right now with Thiem trending upward and Paul going the other way.
The American disappointed greatly in Stockholm last week while Thiem proved very tough to beat in Antwerp. I do expect the Austrian to take a lot of confidence from those performances back home and start off well. He doesn’t do too well at home traditionally which is something to pay attention to but he looked far better than Paul.
Paul is an aggressive player who doesn’t waste any time in rallies and I think the physical toughness of Thiem will give him an edge in a match that could go long. The over is solid value but I have to take Thiem to win at this odd as it’s too good to pass up.
Tip: Thiem to win the match: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
