Taylor Fritz v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

The pair have played each other six times before, and Shapovalov leads their head to head series by four matches to two.

The Canadian won their first three matches, at Delray Beach in 2018, at the Davis Cup Finals the following year, and at the US Open in 2020.

Their two matches in 2021 in Doha and San Diego finished one match apiece, but it was Fritz who won their semi-final final in Tokyo recently.

Tokyo Winner Fritz Pushed Hard by Nishioka

Fritz’s win at the Tokyo Open was his third of the season for American, and kept alive his hopes of qualifying for the ATP finals.

However, in his first match since then he was given a tough examination by Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan, the world number 37.

There was very little to choose between them in the first set, and it took a tie-break, which went in favour of Fritz, to eventually separate them.

Break opportunities finally began to appear in the second set and, at one point, Fritz had match point, but the Japanese saved it.

That meant another tie-break, and this time Nishioka came out on top.

When Fritz was broken early in the third set, the tide seemed to be turning against him. But he broke back and then broke again, finally wrapping up a hard fought win.

Shapovalov Eases Past Wildcard

The semi-final defeat to Fritz in Japan had been Shapovalov’s best result of the season, and, a second round defeat in Stockholm last week, was indicative of some of his struggles for form in 2022.

But he started his campaign in Vienna well with a comfortable win over the Austrian wildcard Jiri Rodionov.

It was the Austrian, ranked 130th in the world who was the first to drop his serve midway through the first set. He immediately responded with a break of his own, only to fall a break behind again. Shapovalov closed out the set next game.

The Canadian broke early in the second set and, went on to hold three match points before Rodionov redeemed himself by breaking back.

The respite was short-lived, however, as Shapovalov broke him again to clinch the match.

Fritz v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

Their Tokyo semi-finals went to three sets, and it would be no surprise if this match were to follow a similar pattern. It should be close but Fritz will rate his chances of pulling off another win.
