Medvedev Off to a Flying Start

Top seed Daniil Medvedev got off to a flying start in Vienna as he breezed past Nikoloz Basilashvili in no time on Wednesday.

Dominant from start to finish, Medvedev didn’t face a single break point, while he converted four out four to oust the world no. 94, 6-2, 6-2.

Medvedev out-aced the Georgian 10-0 and won 81% points on his first serve during the one-hour contest.

The Russian, who was a semifinalist in Astana in his previous tournament, will be happy with the start he has got in the tournament and will be eager to build on that as he chases a second title of the year.

The 26-year-old hasn’t had a good season in terms of titles won. He has reached four finals, but finished second best at the Australian Open, Rosmalen Open and the Halle Open. The only time he tasted success this year, it was in Los Cabis, where he beat Cameron Norrie to pick his 14th career title from 26 finals.

He faces an in-form Thiem in the next round. Can he keep the momentum going and advance to the quarterfinals?

Thiem Saves 2 MPs to Down Paul

Dominic Thiem saved two match points in the deciding set tiebreak before edging out Tommy Paul in a thrilling first round contest on Tuesday.

The 2019 Vienna champion showed great resolve after being outplayed by the world no. 30 in the first set, as he came back to win two tiebreaks and clinch the two hour and 56 minute contest 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6).

Although Thiem won just 103 points in the match, nine fewer than Paul, it was his ability to hold nerves in pressure situation that helped him survive an early exit.

The 29-year-old local favourite improved his Vienna record to 16-9 and his tour-level season record to 18-15. After a quiet start to the season, the former world no. 3 has picked up pace on the indoor courts, where he improved his season record to 13-5. Those 13 wins also include his run to the final at the Rennes Challenger. It was that tournament in September which gave Thiem a lot of confidence and that was seen on his tour-lvel performances.

The Austrian came into the tournament with back-to-back semifinal appearances in Gijon and Antwerp. Can he keep the good work going on Thursday?

Medvedev v Thiem Prediction and Tip

With Thiem back in form and also at home, it will be a tough challenge for the world no. 4 Medvedev. However, the latter himself is in great form and looked very comfortable in the opening round. Expect a good game with Medvedev going through.
