Daniil Medvedev v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

Medvedev has a 3-2 record against the Canadian. Shapovalov won their first two meetings in three sets, but Medvedev won the next three in straight sets. Their only meeting this year, ended with Medvedev winning 7-5, 7-5 in Cincinnati.

Daniil Medvedev continued his flawless run in Vienna, reaching the final with another straight sets win on Saturday.

Serving well throughout the week, Medvedev has not been broken in the tournament. In fact he has faced just one break point in the four matches leading up to the final and that was against Dominic Thiem in the second round.

On Saturday, Medvedev ousted Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets to prevent the Bulgarian from reaching a first final since 2018. The world no. 4 broke the world no. 32 once in the first set and twice in the second to clinch the one-hour and 26-minute contest 6-4, 6-2.

This is the fifth time that Medvedev has reached a final this year and is chasing just his second title of the season. He finished runner-up at the Australian Open, the Rosmalen Open and the Halle Open, but finally captured his first title in Los Cabos.

Overall the Russian is 44-15 this year and will be eager to get his 45th win by lifting his 15th career trophy on Sunday.

Medvedev’s road to his 27th final has included straight set wins over Nikoloz Basilashvili, Dominic Thiem, Jannik Sinner and Dimitrov in the first fur matches. Can he cap off the week with another win?

Shapovalov Knocks Out Coric

Facing Medvedev in the final will be Denis Shapovalov, who ended Borna Coric’s determined run in the tournament with a straight sets win in the semifinals on Saturday.

The Canadian left-hander wasn’t broken in the match as he needed an hour and 29 minutes to beat the Croatian 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.

The win lifted Shapovalov into his second final of the season and a sixth of his career. He has only won once though and that was at the Stockholm Open in 2019. Since then he is 0-4 in the finals. Most recently he went down to Yoshihito Nishioka in the title clash in Seoul.

Shapovalov’s recent form has been excellent and since making a third round exit at the U.S Open, the world number 19 has gone 11-3. In Vienna, this was his third straight sets win. The only time he dropped a set in the tournament, it was against Taylor Fritz in the second round, when he scored a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

Shapovalov had begun the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jurij Rodionov and had beaten Daniel Evans 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Saturday’s win over Coric saw the 23-year-old win 95% (37 of 39) points on the back of his first delivery. He also hot 26 winners in the match and will be looking to take that sort of form into the final against the dominant Medvedev.

Medvedev has reached the final without breaking a sweat and he remains the favourite to win the title as well. The question is will he drop a set? Going by how he has raised his game in the tournament, it seems his may finish off the final in straight sets as well.
