Not that Carreno Busta was a favourite going into his second round match against Denis Shapovalov but he still needed two hours and 16 minutes to register a win over the Canadian and seal his third round spot.
The Spaniard won 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-4 to make it third far in Paris for only the second time in his career, having been a quarterfinalist in 2020.
Enduring 12 aces and a whopping 86% first serve points won from Shapovalov, Carreno Busta was also broken three times in the match while he himself found his way around his opponent’s serve just two times.
That, however, did not deter him from grabbing crucial moments in the encounter which allowed him to come away with the win. A second serve win percentage of 70 despite it falling to 44% in the second set meant Shapovalov found it tough to break the Spaniard’s serve in the first and third set.

Paul Stunner for Nadal
We had mentioned in our preview to this match how Rafael Nadal might have had a few other things on his mind coming into his second round match.
And that seemed to have been the case during the encounter too as Paul managed to overturn a first set deficit to carve out a shock victory.
Paul won 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 and later admitted it was the best result of his career as he also went on to deny his opponent a chance at a year-ending top ranking on the ATP charts.
Down a set and a break in the second, Paul did not look to be too nervous as he also acknowledged post the win, and broke back to push the set into a tie-breaker. From there on, there was only one winner as the American wrapped up the tie-breaker before breaking his more illustrious opponent two more times to pocket the encounter.
With that kind of confidence, Paul would hold bit of an edge coming into this third round match as he looks to make it to just his second Masters 1000 quarterfinal.
Carreno Busta v Paul Prediction and Tip
Not much to choose between these two players but one can expect this to be a long-drawn battle that goes into the third set.
