Alcaraz Hurries Past Dimitrov

World no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz needed just an hour and 11 minutes to dispatch Grigor Dimitrov in the third round on Thursday.

As a result of the win Alcaraz improved to 57-14 for the season and moved into his fifth ATP 1000 quarterfinal of the season and the first at the Paris Masters. While he won his first two Masters titles in Miami and Madrid, he lost in the semifinals in Indian Wells and made a last eight exit from Cincinnati.

It will be interesting to see if he can keep charging towards a sixth title of the year with a win on Friday. In addition to the two Masters titles, Alcaraz also won his first major at the U.S. Open and also triumphed in Rio and Barcelona for his first two ATP 500 titles.

The six-time tour-level champion has also had two runner-up finishes this season and two more wins can take him into an eighth final in 2022.

The 19-year-old, who has made the biggest impact in men’s tennis this year, had opened his Paris campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round. He did not drop a set in the second round either, beating Dimitrov 6-1, 6-3.

Dominant from the start, Alcaraz broke the Bulgarian thrice in the first set and twice in the second. Dimitrov never really threatened but enjoyed a little phase of success in the middle of the second set, when he won three in a row. But that phase didn’t last long as Alcaraz ran away with the last three games to take the contest and advance.
