18 countries will feature in the first season of the United Cup that begins from later this week and for the first time in tennis history, a team event comprising of both, the ATP and WTA tour, will also see points awarded to individual players.
Here’s a ready reckoner on the points system on offer for the 2023 United Cup and how can players earn those.
How Many Points are on Offer at the United Cup 2023?
A maximum of 500 points can be won on the singles, ATP and WTA circuit. However, unlike most of the other tournaments on either tour, the points are awarded on the basis of not just the round in which the match was played but also the opponent ranking.

How Can Players Earn Ranking Points at United Cup?
Players can earn ranking points on both, the ATP and WTA circuit by winning matches. There are multiple factors on which a player can earn their ranking points, namely:
- Stage of the Tournament
- Opponent Ranking
How does this make the United Cup ranking system different from any other ATP or WTA tournament point system? Most other tennis tournaments award points on the basis of the stage of the competition but the opposition ranking isn’t given any importance. United Cup is the first tournament where the opposition rank decides on how many points can a player carve out for a win.
Needless to say, later the stage of the tournament and higher the ranking of the opponent, more the points earned.
Below is a table that represents the points earned by singles players based on who a player is taking on and the stage at which the match is played.
As can be seen from the table above, a maximum of 500 points are on offer which can be won if a player wins both his matches at the group stage and then goes on to win the Host City Finals, Semifinals and Final, all against top-10 players.
Anything less than that, a player will earn lesser than 500 points – making it difficult for anyone to achieve that.
So for example if Stefanos Tsitsipas helps Greece win the United Cup title and on his way wins his singles matches at the Group Stage (against players ranked 15 and 25 respectively) and then loses his Host City Finals singles match, then defeats two top-10 players in the semifinals and final, the points he will earn are 395 (45+40+0+130+180).
