In a year when a fellow Frenchwoman – Caroline Garcia – was making waves, Cornet showed a mix of sparkle and inconsistency.
Cornet ended the season with a win-loss record of 27-25 which saw the highs of the Frenchwoman reaching the final at Monastir and the semifinals in the Cleveland Open and Bad Homburg Open. Not to mention a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open.
And then there were the other lows like the 13 times Cornet was knocked out of the competitions in the very first match she played at them. This included back to back second round exits at the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open and three losses in a row to end the season.
What Cornet will be aiming for is more consistency in her play and will hope she can also ride her good form to take her back into the top 20 of the WTA Rankings, a place she hasn’t been in since 2015.
She should start off feeling confident here against a player ranked 147th in the world.

Carle at Career-High Ranking
Carle was outside the top 600 in the world in 2020. A little over two years on, she is sitting pretty ranked 147th on the WTA Rankings, and raring to break into the top 100 for the first time.
And the manner in which Carle has gone about her business, it does look likely this season.
The one challenge coming into this tournament is Carle’s form on surfaces outside of clay. She is known for her performances on the red dirt and that was on display even in the WTA 125 tournament she featured in, towards the end of the season.
Playing at the Buenos Aires Open in November, Carle made it to the semifinal there before going down to Panna Udvardy.
On the other hand, on hard court surfaces, Carle won just 13 of her 24 matches but more vitally none of those wins came at the WTA level. Which is also why despite her sterling rise in the rankings, overcoming Cornet in a hard court tournament might be a bridge too far at the moment for her.

Cornet will start off a favourite here, what with the Frenchwoman’s solidity and Carle’s lack of result on hard courts making it an easy win for the Frenchwoman.
