Matteo Berrettini v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head
Their only previous outing came in the 2022 season at Rio. It turned out to be a tough battle that saw Berrettini triumph in three sets.

While Berrettini did face a few illness issues in 2022, including one that forced him to pull out of Wimbledon, he had a reasonably strong season. It was one that was punctuated with two titles, two other final appearances and a semifinal showing at the Australian Open.
Berrettini had kick-started the season with that march into the final four at the season’s first major but then missed out on going the distance at Indian Wells and failed to appear in Miami.
His first title of the year came in Stuttgart on grass and he doubled his tally when he won the next tournament he participated at the Queen’s Club as well.
Unfortunately for him, he suffered a bout of Covid-19 and missed Wimbledon as a result but then ended up with a quarterfinal showing at the US Open and with a runner-up trophy in Napoli.
He should not have a lot of problem heading into this opening fixture against a clay court specialist.

Monteiro’s Won Just One Main Draw Match Since US Open
Brazil’s Monteiro’s previous season looked to be headed in the right direction when he hit a career-high ranking of 61st in the world last year.
However, after having made the second round at US Open, Monteiro’s form looked to have fallen away a tad as he failed to win too many matches at the highest level.
Three successive Davis Cup losses and one main draw wins from five ATP tournaments followed soon after as the clay court specialist Monteiro ended the year ranked 71st.
He will hope to claw his way right back but by the looks of how he’s gone about his business in his 13-year-long career, Monteiro might need to wait till after the Australian Open to do that. Because that’s when the clay court swing resumes.
