Beatriz Haddad Maia v Malene Helgo Head to Head

Haddad Maia and Helgo have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Haddad Maia Romps to Crushing Win

There was no doubting Haddad Maia was an overwhelming favourite in her first match of the season against Martina Trevisan. We had expected a straight-set win as well which is exactly how it went in her opener.

More importantly, a 6-2, 6-0 win over Trevisan meant Haddad Maia had managed to live up to our games handicap prediction (mentioned here).

The match lasted a mere hour and 19 minutes, with Trevisan remaining in the contest for a few minutes when she  broke Haddad Maia right back in the second game after losing the first game.

From there on, the Brazilian, who won the Most Improved WTA Player of the Season award for 2022, clinched 11 of the next 12 games to notch up the points for her side.

And she now takes on a player who has never been ranked inside the top 300. It might not be the most difficult couple of successive wins in the offing for the Brazilian.

Helgo Hoping to Show a Fight

With five ITF titles under her belt, including one in 2022, Helgo has improved to 319th in the world – her career-best ranking – but this will only be her second WTA tournament.

The first one she featured in, in Bastad was a WTA 125 competition and Helgo had fallen in the very first round there.

A finals appearance on the ITF circuit a couple of months before that and another title win as recently as in November allowed Helgo to not just break into the top 400 but also get closer to getting into the top 300.

While challenging a top-15 player might be beyond the realms of Helgo’s current pedigree, she has shown early promise and matches like these would give her a great exposure to tennis at the highest level.

Other than that, not expecting too much out of the 23-year-old here.

Haddad Maia v Helgo Prediction and Tip

Haddad Maia should have no worries here and another crushing win looks par for the course.
