Borna Coric v Francisco Cerundolo Head to Head

Their only previous match-up came at the 2022 Davis Cup where Coric came away a straight-set winner.

Coric’s Cincinnati Exploits Make Him a Player to Watch Out

Fitness issues had laid Coric low for most part of 2021 and even when he returned in 2022, there was nothing in his game that suggested we were looking at a former world number 12.

Losses piled up like unpaid credit card bills as Coric went into mid-June 2022 on the back of just two victories and eight losses.

A title win at the Parma Challenger helped get some of his rhythm back, in turn helping him make it to the quarterfinal of the Hamburg Open in July. The real turnaround, however, came in Cincinnati when the 152nd-ranked Coric needed a wildcard to enter the main draw.

What followed was a stunning week of tennis that saw Coric send Lorenzo Musetti, Rafael Nadal, Roberto Bautista Agut, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cameron Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas packing to win the tournament. In the six matches he won, Coric dropped just one set.

Coric will hope he can continue in the same vein as he enters the new year without a lot of points to defend and a chance to regain his former career-best ranking again.

Cerundolo Coming off Crushing Loss

Cerundolo was coming into this tournament on the back of a solid season that saw him rise from being ranked 127th in the world to a stunning 24th in a matter of six months. Most of his success, however, was reliant on his performances on clay.

And therein lies the rub when one looks at even his current ranking of 30th in the world.

Featuring in a competition like this which is played on a hardcourt surface, Cerundolo will have his work cut out and that was the case in the opening match of the season.

Taking on Arthur Rinderknech, the Argentine fell to a 6-4, 6-2 defeat in a matter of an hour and 33 minutes. What makes it worse is Cerundolo failed to garner a single break-point while himself being at the receiving end of seven of them.

And now up against a player who has well-established hardcourt credentials, things could get that much more difficult.

Coric v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip

Coric’s solid end to the previous season and Cerundolo’s troubles on hardcourt surfaces combine to give us just one possible result – an easy win for the Croat.
