Casper Ruud v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

Considering every stage of the tournament and all levels of competitive tennis, these two have faced off on four occasions in their career between 2017 and 2019.

All four matches came on clay with Ruud leading 3-1 on head to head.

Ruud Hoping to Follow Up Well on Best Season of His Career

It was a season to remember for Ruud, who not only won three titles in 2022 but also performed admirably well in Grand Slams for the first time.

At the French Open, Ruud reached his maiden Grand Slam final before falling to Rafael Nadal in straight sets. And as if to prove his detractors wrong – those who have called him a one-dimensional, clay-court specialist – Ruud made it to the title-decider stage at US Open as well.

Had he won the title at Flushing Meadows, Ruud would have jumped to number one in the world – a result so against the run of play nobody would have imagined a few months ago despite Ruud’s performances on clay.

Ruud lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final there but still made it to second in the world before ending the season ranked third.

What Ruud will now hope is for at least a repeat of his showing last season and an improvement on what he managed during the Australian Open swing in 2022 (where he featured in only the ATP Cup and ended with a 2-1 win-loss record).

Monteiro Puts up a Fight But Loses to Berrettini

The match lasted nearly two hours but in the end Monteiro was unable to break through Matteo Berrettini’s defences in their opening United Cup encounter.

Monteiro, who was a whopping 19/5 to topple Berrettini, frittered away two set-points in the second set before losing 6-4, 7-6 (7) to the Italian player.

In a match where there were only two break-points on offer – both for Berrettini – Monteiro’s inability to break his opponent’s serve proved to be the difference. Still, the Brazilian will be pleased with his effort on a surface which isn’t his favourite, as he managed to win 72% of his first serve points.

Coming up against Ruud, Monteiro will believe he might have a better chance if he plays as well as he did in the opener.

Can he convert that into a win though?

Ruud v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Ruud’s higher pedigree makes it difficult to ignore him as a favourite to win this in straight sets but Monteiro has shown what he’s capable of outside of clay as well. We could see bit of a fight from him again.
