Elise Mertens v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came at the 2021 WTA Dubai and Mertens had won that opening round encounter in three sets.

Ranked 14th in the world as recently as in 2021, Mertens’ performances – and rankings as a result – took a tumble last season when she failed to reproduce some of her results from the previous years.
A fourth round appearance at the Australian Open early in 2022 should have been a perfect launchpad for the rest of the season. Instead, Mertens failed to rise above the kind of mediocrity that is best reserved for a 50th-ranked player aiming to break out instead of a top-20 one.
She did enter the fourth round at Wimbledon too but with the tournament’s results not amounting to ranking points, it did not make too much difference and by September, Mertens had fallen to 44th on the WTA charts.
It was towards the final quarter of the season that Mertens finally managed to find rhythm, winning a title at Monastir as well and pulled back to finish the year ranked 29th.

Tomova Easily Falls to Sakkari
Tomova was on court for an hour and 28 minutes but failed to make an impression in her opening match against Greek number one Maria Sakkari.
While Tomova did draw the first blood by breaking Sakkari in the third game of the opening set, that is all that came her way throughout the encounter. Sakkari broke right back and then again in the eighth game to pouch the set.
The second set was one-way traffic with Sakkari breaking early and consolidating with another one in the seventh game. Tomova managed to win just three points on Sakkari’s serve in the second set.
Now coming up against Mertens, Tomova might have some respite from the point of view of her opponent’s serve but it could still get very difficult for the Bulgarian.

Mertens should not face too many issues but it must be quickly remembered that Tomova had managed to take a set off her the first time they had faced off and that the Belgian is coming into the season to play her first match while her opponent has already featured in one.
