Gojo Looking to Step Up after First Challenger Title

Borna Gojo is yet to make an impact at the top level. However, last season, the 24-year-old did produce a few good results that not only propelled him into the top 200 in the world, but also saw him reach the career-high ranking of No. 144.

Gojo qualified for his first major at the French Open in 2022 and then won his first round match to make it to the Round of 64. He could not proceed further but would have taken a lot of confidence from that tournament.

The Croatian, who had also reached his first Challenger final in Bengaluru in February 2022, reached a second Challenger final in October in Ortisei, Italy. While he lost to Tseng Chun-hsin in Bengaluru, he captured his maiden Challenger title in Ortisei by beating Lukáš Klein in the final.

Gojo has been at his best on hard courts and will be looking to make further impression in the United Cup.

Coria Demolished in Opener

A clay court specialist, Federico Coria has hardly played on surfaces other than his favourite surface and therefore it was inevitable that he would lose his opening singles match to Adrian Mannarino in the France vs. Argentina tie. But despite his inferior record to the Frenchman on hard courts, he was still expected to put up a challenge.

However, he was no match to the Frenchman, as Mannarino needed just over an hour to beat the Argentine 6-1, 6-0.

Coria didn’t win a single service game in the match. He won his only game by breaking the Frenchman in the first set after the latter had built a 4-0 lead. However, Mannarino restored the two-break advantage in the sixth game and then sealed the set in the next.

Mannarino was even more dominant in the second set, dropping just three points off his serve and 11 on return.

Coria had a 43-33 record, across levels last year. He was 40-27 on his favourite surface, which included a Challenger title in Milan and a runner-up finish on the Challenger tour in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Gojo v Coria Prediction and Tip

This is going to be an interesting contest as Coria is far more experienced at the tour level, but has little experience on hard courts, while Gojo plays better on hard courts compared to other surfaces.
