Medvedev Looking to Recapture 2021 Glory

By most players’ standards, Medvedev had a solid 2022 season.

Medvedev, however, isn’t ‘most players’. He had won a Grand Slam coming into 2022 and was ranked at the top of the world in February of the last season. The Russian would been expected to do a lot more than just win two ATP titles and none at Masters 1000 or Grand Slam level in 2022.

And as if to prove that Medvedev had lost his way since making it to the Australian Open 2022 final, he fell to three successive defeats at the ATP Finals as well, crashing out in the first round.

He has fallen to seventh in the world now and with an Australian Open runner-up result to defend, Medvedev will need to start things off strongly in Adelaide. Can he overcome his 45th-ranked opponent in style here?

Sonego Hits Career-Best…Again!

For the second season running, Sonego hit his career-best ranking of 21st in the world. And for the second time, he failed to break into the top 20, falling to 45th in the world by the end of the year.

In 2021, it was a title in Calgiari that set Sonego rolling. Last season, it was a victory at the Metz Open which brought Sonego back from the dumps, after the Italian’s previously mediocre results had seen him fall to 65th on the charts.

He rose to 45th in the world with that Metz result in September and then managed to maintain that ranking till the end of the season despite winning just one of his next six main draw matches.

Sonego has now been drawn against a former world number one, a result of being unseeded in the tournament. That’s another reason why Sonego will look to jump back to his best – gives him a better chance to avoid these early pitfalls.

Medvedev v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Medvedev has sounded out he is fit and raring to go and even admitted he should avoid getting into the wrong books of the Aussie crowds. No surprises then he is a heavy favourite at 1/7 but we expect Sonego to provide some fight here.
