Maria Sakkari v Elise Mertens Head to Head
The two ladies have a fierce rivalry; the head-to-head tally stands at 5-4 in favour of Sakkari.
They last met in the 2022 St. Petersburg Open, where the Greek won in straight sets.

Maria Sakkari has done well for her country so far in the United Cup 2023. Playing Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova in the opener, she won the match comfortably by 6-3, 6-2.
Later, partnered with Stefanos Tsitsipas, she beat the Bulgarian pair of Gergana Topalova and Adrian Andreev in straight sets. As a result, Greece now leads the Group A table 4-1.
As for Sakkari’s previous season, it has been a phenomenal one. She peaked at the #3 position in the WTA singles ranking and finished the year at the 6th spot. Her tally stood at 40-23 – courtesy of four singles finals which include the Indian Wells Open and Guadalajara Open.
Maria was also a semifinalist in the WTA Finals in Texas, losing to Caroline Garcia. All in all, she is well-positioned for a terrific spell in 2023 too.

Mertens on Shaky Grounds
Elise Mertens, current World No. 29, had to work hard to earn her maiden win in the Cup. The Belgian representative took on Topalova and won 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 in a match that should have otherwise ended in a straight-set victory.
Despite that, Belgium moved on to lose the fixture to Bulgaria after losing the two men’s singles and the one doubles matches. The country is now placed third in the group and finds itself in a must-win position to advance.
Pressure will be on Mertens to deliver, who also happens to be doubles No. 5. She is vastly experienced but hasn’t quite managed to replicate that doubles success onto the singles circuit.
Her last season ended at 29-23 – the highlight being the Jasmin Open title in October and three fourth-round appearances in the majors.
Sakkari v Mertens Prediction and Tip
Sakkari is the clear favourite here. She is in form, has momentum, and truly appears to be in her element. Mertens is a bit rusty, and given her lack of singles showing, she faces a Herculean task against the Greek.
