Rune was ranked 477th in the world at some point in 2021. He ended that year at 103rd, having shaved off over 370 ranks in a matter of 11 months.
It got that much better in 2022 when Rune broke into the top 10 of the ATP Rankings for the first time in his career, having won three titles in the season.
The Dane began his journey to the top with a Munich Open triumph on clay before winning the title at Stockholm on indoor hard court. Still, nobody would have been prepared for what followed at Basel and subsequently and more importantly at the Paris Masters.
Rune made the final at the former and then went all guns blazing in Paris, winning the title at the Masters 1000. In doing so, he defeated Stan Wawrinka, Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev, Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Novak Djokovic – the whose who of tennis.

Nishioka Also at His Best
Having won his maiden ATP title in 2018, Nishioka doubled his title count in 2022 when he won the Seoul title in October. His best performance, however, had come at the Washington Open just before that where the Japanese made the final at the expense of some of the best in the world.
Nishioka overcame Jenson Brooksby, Alex de Minaur, Karen Khachanov, Dan Evans and Andrey Rublev on his way to a loss at the hands of Nick Kyrgios in the title-decider.
These two results, both of which came on hardcourt surfaces, combined with some impressive results on the Challenger circuit were enough to help Nishioka to break into his career-best rank of 36th in the world, which is where he ended the season.
