Mikael Ymer v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

The head-to-head between Ymer and Safiullin is tied at 1-1. The Swede won their first meeting at the Koblenz Challenger in 2019 before Safiullin avenged that loss last year’s Belgrade Open.

Ymer Looks to Build On from Last Year’s QF run

Mikael Ymer produced a very respectable run at the Adelaide International last year, streaking to the quarterfinals without dropping a set. He took out the likes of Benjamin Bonzi and Soonwoo Kwon, before falling to Thanasi Kokkinakis, the hometown hero.

That run only highlighted the immense potential that the Swede possesses. But it looks like he hasn’t quite tapped into it fully. At 24, the Swede is yet to win an ATP title, despite his best efforts to do so at the Winston-Salem Open (lost in the final) in 2021 and most recently in Florence where he lost in the semifinal last season.

Ymer will have a handful of goals for the 2023 season, including his quest for an ATP title, and making inroads at Grand Slam tournaments.

He has not been ranked higher than 67th in the rankings, which partly elaborates why he hasn’t reached the business end of the top-level ATP tournaments due to the brutal draws he gets on a weekly basis.

Safiullin Survives Pospisil Test

Roman Safiullin is no slouch, especially on hard courts. When he is on, the Russian is a tough cookie and a handful of ATP’s best players can attest to it.

Vasek Pospisil learned it the hard way on Sunday as he lost in the final round of qualifying against the Russian. Pospisil won the first set in a tiebreak, but his level dropped considerably in the second set as he lost serve twice, gifting the set to Safiullin.

The was the most attacking player in the third set, as he posted 14 winners to Pospisil’s six, and won 13 of 27 points behind the return. The Canadian with eight costly double faults to his name and just one of four breaks converted paid the hefty price in the end.

Safiullin will now fancy his chances of getting through to the second round when he faces Ymer on Monday.

Ymer v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

Ymer is a slight favorite coming into this, but Safiullin is riding on a huge momentum swing after getting through a very testing encounter against Pospisil. We reckon the Swede might be undercooked in his game, this being his first outing.
