Sofia Kenin v Xinyu Wang Head to Head

Kenin owns a 1-0 head-to-head record over Wang, having beaten the Chinese in the first round of Wimbledon in 2021.

Another Year to Forget for Kenin

Sofia Kenin’s huge fall from grace has been one of the most disappointing storylines in the past two years. When she won the Australian Open back in 2020, Kenin looked set to dominate the women’s tour for the foreseeable future.

But her loss of form and persistent injury problems saw Kenin go into the wilderness in 2021. She also parted company with her father who was her coach at the time but has since reunited with him.

Fitness was a continuing issue for Kenin who missed so many tournaments in 2022 including Grand Slam events at French Open and Wimbledon. Her Australian Open points garnered in 2020 fell off last year, and her ranking plummeted to outside the Top 300.

Kenin starts the new season on a clean slate having received a main draw wild card to compete in Auckland for the third time.

Wang Could Trouble Inconsistent American

Any drop in performance levels by Kenin, then rest assured Xinyu Wang will capitalize on it. The 21-year-old Chinese woman ended the season with a flourish on the ITF Tour after struggling with her form midway through the year.

Wang won 15 of her last 20 matches at all levels, and captured the W60 ITF title in Tokyo towards the end of November. Wang was synonymous with giving Aryna Sabalenka a very tough time at their 2022 Australian Open second-round match when she led 6-1 before losing in three.

Her quality shone throughout the low-tier events and will be keen to showcase her talents at Tour level, beginning with her maiden appearance at the ASB Classic.

Kenin v Wang Prediction and Tip

If Kenin was looking to put her recent slump behind her, then this first round offers no room for respite. Wang ended her season with a title win, while the American was bundled out of the WTA 125K tournament in Limoges in the first round by Anna Blinkova. With all things considered, it is tough to see Kenin getting any joy in Auckland.
