Kovinic Hoping for Better Results This Season

Kovinic continues to fly the flag for women’s tennis in Montenegro, even though it has been nearly six years since she reached her career high world ranking of 46.

She has appeared in three senior WTA finals, finishing on the losing side each time, the most recent of those defeats coming on the green clay of Charleston in April, 2021, beaten in straight sets by Veronika Kudermetova.

At the end of last season, she was a beaten finalist again in a Challenger event in Buenos Aires, beaten by the Hungarian Panna Udvardy on that occasion.

Arguably her best result of 202w came at Indian Wells, where she beat the world number eight at the time, Karolina Pliskova, in three sets.

Auckland is part of her preparations for the Australian Open which she may be looking forward to, having got to the third round last year, a feat she emulated at the French Open a few months later.

Hibino Battles Through Qualifiers

has won two senior singles titles on the WTA tour, although the most recent of those was back in 2019 on home soil, when she claimed the Japan Open crown.

She has also won eight ITF events, and, last year, reached her first final at that level for four years, although she subsequently lost the match in Chiang Rai, Thailand, beaten by Gao Xinyu of China.

At the height of her career, she was ranked as high as 56 in the world, but her current world ranking means that she was made to enter qualifying in Auckland.

That prove to be something of a trial by combat. In her first match against the American Coco Vandeweghe, she had to save three match points, before battling back to win it in the third set.

Then, playing Jaqueline Cristian of Romania, after taking the first set, she was pegged back, and once again taken to three sets, before finally getting the better of her opponent.

Kovinic v Hibino Prediction and Tip

Hibino will begin this match as favourite, having already proven her match fitness with those two matches in qualifying, and also having beaten Kovinic in their one previous meeting.
