Elina Svitolina v Ons Jabeur Head to Head

These two have played each other twice before this and Svitolina, unsurprisingly, has a 2-0 lead. What’s interesting is that the first time they played was nearly seven years ago in a $25k competition in La Marsa on clay and Svitolina had dropped just three games in that one. Their second meeting at Taipei City was a lot closer and saw Svitolina finally win in three tough sets.

Svitolina, the Two-Time Defending Champion

It has been a glorious run for Svitolina at the Dubai Open, having not just won the title twice in a row but also beaten some of the top players in the world while doing so. For instance, en route her first win in 2017 in Dubai, Svitolina overcame Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki, both in straight sets to register the victory.

It was followed by the 2018 edition where Naomi Osaka, who admittedly was a wild-card entrant, Kerber and Daria Kasatkina were all outplayed on her way to the title.

Svitolina has gone from strength to strength since then, having made the WTA Finals and gone on to win it by registering five wins in that tournament late last year. While a shock first round defeat at the Brisbane International awaited her earlier this year, she made it to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open where she was at the receiving end of an Osaka special.

And last week, she made the semi-finals in Doha where she lost to Simona Halep. Form’s on Svitolina’s side for sure.

Can Jabeur Recapture her Moscow Run?

Three qualifying rounds and five main draw matches later, Ons Jabeur had her best ever WTA run of her career. She made it to the Kremlin Cup final where she finally lost to Daria Kasatkina but the amount of confidence it would have given her could have well pushed her forward this year too.

However, it’s not been one of her better starts in 2019 so far.

Second round exits at Shenzhen and Hobart have been followed by defeats in the first round at the Australian Open and Doha, coming into this tournament. And a first round match against Donna Vekic had her as the second-favourite for the encounter but she did well to complete a 6-4, 7-6 win over her opponent.

Can she win two matches in a row for the first time this season? Not a very appetising proposition against the two-time defending champion.

Svitolina v Jabeur Predictions & Tips

No surprises who the overwhelming favourite is with Svitolina starting out at 2/11 (bet365) while Jabeur at 7/2. What we expect is a bit of a fight from the Turk and hence, over 19.5 games to be played in this one, with  Betway offering 4/5 for it.
