Cirstea Looking to Get 2023 Off on a Winning Note
Following her resurgence in 2021, when she won a title in Istanbul and finished runner-up in Strasbourg, Sorana Cirstea had a comparatively quieter 2022.
The 32-year-old finished the season with a 22-21 record. She reached three semifinals in Lyon (indoor), Istanbul (clay) and Birmingham (grass) but couldn’t reach a tour final in the entire season.
Cirstea however struggled on hard courts. She did well at the Australian Open, winning three matches, before falling in the Round of 16.
That was only one of two hard court tournaments where she won consecutive matches, the other being the Indian Wells Open.
Overall, Cirstea went 10-10 on hard courts.
The Romanian will be looking to start the year well and produce more win on hard courts this season.
She did well at the Australian Open over the last two years, reaching the third and fourth rounds respectively and will be hoping to reach a first quarterfinal in the Melbourne Slam this year. For that she will be aiming to do well in the warm-up events, starting with the Adelaide International.

Golubic Qualifies for Main Draw
Viktorija Golubic came back from a set down to oust Storm Sanders of Australia in the second round of qualifiers on Sunday to make it to the main draw of Adelaide International.
The Swiss player found herself trailing the World no. 241 by a set, after she conceded the only break of the opening set.
But Golubic came back into the contest with a sole break of the second set and then edged Sanders in the final set after both players exchanged a number of breaks.
Golubic was 0-2 down, then she got a double break to lead 3-2. However, Sanders broke again to draw level at 3-3. But the World no. 76 then raced away with the match, breaking the Aussie two more times and winning the last three games in a row for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Golubic had earlier beaten Alison Riske-Amritraj 6-2, 6-4 in the first qualifying round.
The 30-year-old Golubic was 31-25 from all levels last year. She reached one WTA 125 final, finishing runner-up in Rouen, France.
Her best on the tour last year was a semifinal finish in Nottingham She also reached quarterfinals in Melbourne, Strasbourg and Warsaw. She also reached the Round of 16 in Indian Wells.
Although she dropped in the rankings to no. 76 from a career-high of 35 in February 2022, she will be hoping to climb back the rankings this season.
Cirstea v Golubic Prediction and Tip
This is expected to be a close contest. Cirstea is the higher ranked player but she struggled on hard courts last year. Also, the momentum is with Golubic. She scored two good wins in the qualifying rounds and can carry that form into the main draw.
