Ons Jabeur v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

There have been three previous matches between these two players, all of which have come on clay and all of them in round one of those tournaments. Cirstea leads 2-1 with Jabeur having won their last meeting that came in Rome last year.

Jabeur Hoping to Improve Hardcourt Record This Season?

Not there is a lot wrong with Jabeur’s performances in hardcourt competitions but for a player looking to threaten Iga Swiatek’s position as the number one player, she will probably want to get better than the 20-12 win-loss record she did have last season on that surface.

None of her three WTA titles have come in hardcourt tournaments either, and at the Australian Open Jabeur has only once made it past the third round.

Which is why a tournament like this will go a long way in getting Jabeur going in the lead-up to the season’s first Grand Slam.

She had ended the previous season with one win from three matches at the WTA Finals and started this new season on the back of a hard-fought win over Emma Raducanu at the Abu Dhabi exhibition competition.

Can she find herself a better rhythm on hardcourts now?

Cirstea Goes Past Golubic

Cirstea hadn’t been the favourite coming into her opening round match against Viktorija Golubic but the manner in which she cruised past her opponent in the first set spoke volumes about how off the mark bookmakers had been.

In a match lasting an hour and 45 minutes, Cirstea ran off to a 6-0, 7-6 (1) win over Golubic to set up this second round meeting with Jabeur.

Interestingly, Cirstea’s serve was tested in the first set too, with the Romanian needing to save five break-points before breaking her opponent three times. In the second, she was broken to love in the very first game before dishing out the same dose back at Golubic to level things out.

The set went into a tie-breaker with neither player getting another break of serve but Cirstea managed to cruise through in it to seal her place in round two.

Can she maintain that kind of a rhythm come the second round against the world number one?

Jabeur v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Jabeur is a favourite and we back her to win here but will it be as simple as the 3/10 odds suggest? May be not. Expect a longish contest that either sees a tie-breaker in a two-set win for Jabeur or a three-setter.
