Daniil Medvedev v Miomir Kecmanovic Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players, both of which came last season. Medvedev was a straight-set winner at both, the French Open and Los Cabos Open.

Medvedev Benefits from Sonego Retirement after a Struggle

Medvedev had already taken a one-set lead in his opening round match and was 2-1 up in the second when his opponent Lorenzo Sonego retired from the match because of an injury to his right arm.

Having not been at his best right throughout the previous season after having made the Australian Open final in 2022, Medvedev would have been hoping for a strong start here. Especially because a potential semifinal against Djokovic seems to be around the corner.

The Russian, however, frittered away three break-points in the opening set, while himself having to save a whopping nine of them – all of them as set-points too – to take it into a tie-breaker.

At 5-5 in the tie-breaker it could again have gone either way but after missing a set-point of his own, Medvedev clinched the lead off the second.

In the second set, Medvedev dropped serve in the very first game before levelling things out with a break in the second game. But just when the match was turning out into a ripper, Sonego had to pull out of the encounter.

Medvedev will need to do a lot better in his next match.

Kecmanovic Cruises Past O’Connell

It needed Kecmanovic only an hour and 35 minutes before he cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 win over Christopher O’Connell and move to the second round.

In an attritional first set, Kecmanovic won just two break-points and converted one of them while himself saving the only one he faced on his own serve.

The second set saw both players exchange a break apiece in the first four games but Kecmanovic got a decisive break in the ninth game. He saved another break-point in the next game before sealing his second round berth.

Against Medvedev, Kecmanovic will need to get all his bearings right having never won a set off the Russian.

Given Medvedev’s not at his best though, the Serb might give himself a teeny weeny chance.

Medvedev v Kecmanovic Prediction and Tip

Medvedev, despite not being in his best form, will be a heavy favourite. Expect him to win but expect a few games in the contest as well – at least 20-21.
