Muchova Benefits from Wang Retirement

Xiyu Wang had gone into her opening round match against Muchova as a 50th-ranked player, which incidentally was also her career-best ranking.

Muchova was a favourite but having not played a lot of tennis over the last couple of seasons because of fitness concerns – a total of 51 matches over two years across all competitions as opposed to 56 in 2019 alone – it could have been anyone’s match.

As it turned out, Muchova went 5-3 ahead in the match on the back of a break of serve in the fifth game before her opponent retired from the contest. The good news for Muchova was her serving, which was up to 88% of the first serve points won.

She didn’t face a single break-point in the contest.

Coming up against Ruse, Muchova will look to take the same confidence as she hopes to make it two in two – something she did just three times in the entirety of the previous season.

Ruse Scrapes Past Routliffe

Not often would you have a player ranked 116th in the world start off a WTA match as a 1/25 favourite but that is exactly what happened when Ruse took on Erin Routliffe in her opener.

That was because Routliffe, a wildcard entrant, is ranked 855th on the WTA charts.

And Ruse looked to be playing like the difference in those rankings suggested, having raced off to a 6-2, 4-3 scoreline. But just as it looked like she would turn the screws and clinch it, Routliffe overcame three break-points and then broke Ruse in the ninth game to push the encounter into a decider.

Again, Ruse looked to have found her bearings when she raced off to a 4-0 lead only to lose her serve twice in a row and for Routliffe to look at a possible shock.

Fortunately for Ruse, she manage to break her opponent two more times and carve out a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win to seal her place against Muchova. She will need to do a lot better if she needs to get the better of the former world number 19.

Muchova v Ruse Prediction and Tip

Muchova might not have played a full match in the opener but showed glimpses of what she is capable of. And with Ruse’s obvious serving struggles, this is Muchova’s to lose.
