Yoshihito Nishioka v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Nishioka leads their head to head series by two matches to one.

He won both their encounters on clay in 2019, at Estoril, and at the French Open, but McDonald won their previous hard court match-up, in Moscow, two years ago.

Nishioka Shocks Another Scandinavian

Last October, Nishioka stunned the world number five Casper Ruud in Seoul on his way to winning the Korean Open title.

And he seems to enjoy playing Scandinavian players, because he began his 2023 campaign by defeating Holger Rune of Denmark, the world number 11.

Not that seemed on the cards in the first set, despite Nishioka holding four early break points against the Rune serve, because it was he who was broken first. Rune followed that up with another break to claim the first set.

However, the Japanese made a strong start to the second set by breaking in the opening game, and then followed that up with another break. Rune clawed one of them back, but it was not enough, and the scores were level.

The third set could have gone either way, with a sequence of four games the deciding factor.

Rune dropped his serve, broke back in turn, but then dropped his serve once more.

In the following game, Rune had two break points to level again, could not take either of them, and Nishioka was able to close out the match from there.

McDonald Benefits from Colombian Retirement

McDonald’s passage to the second round was relatively more serene against the Colombian, Daniel Elahi Galan although the match did not end as either player would have liked.

Galan, the world number 67, is better known as a clay court player, so would not have had great expectations going into the match, although he did knock Stefanos Tsitsipas out of the US Open last August.

His worst fears were confirmed, though, when he was broken in the third game of the first set.

The American, who was barely troubled on his own serve, then consolidated his advantage by breaking again, and the set was his.

At that point, Galan, feeling a niggle, decided to retire, feeling that this early in the season, it was not worth continuing and aggravating any injury.

Nishioka v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Nishioka has developed into a top player. He ended 2022 strongly, and appears to have begun the New Year in the same vein of form. He should be too strong for the American.
