Maria Sakkari v Petra Martic Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2015 US Open qualifiers and Sakkari had won that in straight sets to make it through to the main draw. That was the first time ever that Sakkari had featured in a Grand Slam competition.

Sakkari Sends Mertens Packing

Things could have gotten very tight for Greece had Sakkari failed to win her singles match against Elise Mertens in their tie against Belgium. With Bulgaria having already defeated Belgium, a defeat for Sakkari could have given them an outside chance of making it through to the next stage too.

Instead, Sakkari ran away with the encounter, defeating the former world number 12 in straight sets.

Sakkari was on court for a mere 80 minutes to register a 6-1, 7-5 victory despite being broken three times in the encounter. In fact, the match started with Sakkari losing her serve but that was the only game that Mertens would win in the set.

In the second, the two players exchanged breaks of serves before Sakkari went 4-2 ahead with a second break. Mertens levelled things out soon after only for Sakkari to break to love in the 11th game and then serve the match out.

Having defeated Viktoriya Tomova in the first match she played here, can Sakkari now make it three singles wins in a row?

Martic 1-1 after Garcia Defeat

In what turned out to be a keen tussle between Croatia and France, Martic’s loss to Caroline Garcia could have well proven costly for the former. Fortunately for her side, Borna Gojo was there to squeak past Adrian Mannarino and help Croatia make it through.

After having gotten past Nadia Podoroska in the first match, Martic fell to a straight-set loss at the hands of the world number four Garcia in the second.

Not that Martic did not have her chances, especially after frittering away a set-point in the opening set tie-breaker. She also did well to stall Garcia, warding off four set-points against her before Garcia clinched the set.

Garcia took command of the second set, with Martic dropping serve off the only break-point she faced and in turn, the match 7-6 (9), 6-4.

Martic will hope she can up her game against Sakkari but her fighting spirit has been on display and in a team event with a lot of support, it could be the difference between winning and losing.

Sakkari v Martic Prediction and Tip

Sakkari starts off a heavy favourite at 1/3 and while we reckon she should be able to win this, we also think there will be a fighting show from Martic.
