Jelena Ostapenko v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head

The tally stands at 1-1; they last met in the 2022 Wimbledon, where Ostapenko won 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Ostapenko Moves Past Pliskova

Latvian number one Jelena Ostapenko needed just one hour and seven minutes to stun the former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova. The number seven seed took the match 6-1, 6-3 – winning an impressive five out of eight break points and five games in a row.

Now ranked World No. 18, Ostapenko is seeking a revival of fortunes after ending the last two seasons, coincidentally, with the same tally of 33-19.

She did win a singles title in Dubai and reached the finals in Eastbourne and Seoul – but that wasn’t enough to take her back into the top 10.

Jelena also fared in the doubles circuit; she won the titles in Birmingham and Cincinnati and took the finalist silverware in Dubai and Eastbourne.

A former World No. 5 and a Grand Slam champion, Ostapenko is a solid contender in Adelaide but she will need to up her game significantly in the coming rounds.

Begu Survives Rogers

Irina-Camelia Begu dispatched Shelby Rogers in a two-and-a-half-hour slogfest to reach round two. The veteran Romanian won the match 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 to register her first win over Rogers.

One more win and Begu will have reached her third successive quarterfinal, with her last two stints coming in Bucharest 125 (title run) and the Parma Open.

The 32-year-old will be pleased with how she fared last year, having picked up 11 more wins than in 2021 while registering the same 17 defeats.

Of the 32 victories she bagged, her big moments came in Bucharest and Palermo – alongside the French Open and Wimbledon, where she made it to the mid-rounds. That said, it wasn’t all perfect as she did lose early in several events – much like Ostapenko.

Ostapenko v Begu Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko will start as the favourite but at 7/4, Begu is a bet worth considering. After all, the latter is well-experienced and has seen her fair share of impressive victories. Moreover, the Latvian isn’t entirely immune to shock upsets – so all in all, anything can happen.
