Nishioka Backs Up His Victory Over Rune

Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka backed up his opening-round stunner against Holger Rune, by easing his way past Mackenzie McDonald to reach his first quarterfinal of the season.

Nishioka who is currently sitting at a career-high ranking of No. 36 following his sizzling run of form in 2022, produced a commanding performance.

His quality shot-making earned him an early when he played an excellent defensive lob that drew an unforced error from the American. He went on to clinch the set courtesy of a loose backhand by his opponent.

In the second set, Nishioka continued to reel McDonald in and opened up the court with his high topspin forehand. He played some brilliant passing shots to go up a break midway through the set much to McDonald’s frustration.

And the American was broken to love towards the end.

Popyrin Reaches First QF in Two Years

Alexei Popyrin has not been to an ATP quarterfinal since he last won his maiden ATP title in Singapore in 2021.

But that record has now been cracked after the Australian qualifier authored one of the biggest upsets of Adelaide International by knocking off second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.

And he has backed up that win, coming from behind in his second-round match to take out Marcos Giron.

The American had played in a lung-busting opening match against Richard Gasquet, and he succumbed to the physical intensity of this match towards the end as Popyrin won 4-6 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 53 minutes.

In a tight match of very fine margins, Popyrin’s serve was almost impregnable. After getting broken in the first set, he did not face another break point on his serve, as he rammed down 16 aces and won 84% first-serve points.

The former world No. 59 has now recorded his best showing on Australian soil. Will it get better from here?

Nishioka v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

As good as this run has been by Popyrin, Nishioka is in even better form. His dismissal of McDonald reinforces that point. However, we don’t expect the Aussie to go down without a fight.
