Novak Djokovic v Daniil Medvedev Head to Head

Djokovic leads the rivalry 8-4.

The Serb has won the last three of their matches and won both their matches in 2022, although one of those wins in Astana came after Medvedev retired with the score tied at one-set apiece.

Djokovic Extends Perfect Record Against Shapovalov

Novak Djokovic extended his perfect record over Denis Shapovalov to 8-0 as the world no. 5 eased past the Canadian in straight sets to reach the semifinals of the Adelaide International and set up a blockbuster clash with world no. 7 Daniil Medvedev.

The top seed Serb had a shaky start falling behind 15-40 in the very first game, but he saved both the break points before going on to hold his serve. He needed to save another break point in the fifth game, but converted the only one that he held in the eighth game.

He served out the set in the next game and then got an early break in the second to build a 3-1 lead. However, Shapovalov found his way back in the set, winning the next three games in a row.

Djokovic restored the advantage in the ninth game, breaking the world no. 18 by converting the fourth break point of the game. He then fell 0-30 behind in the next game, but won four points in a row to serve out the match 6-3, 6-4.

This was a third straight straight sets win for the 21-time Grand Slam champion. He had begun the Adelaide campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over France’s Constant Lestienne in the first round. However, he faced some stern resistance from another Frenchman Quentin Halys in the second round. The former no.1 overcame a 2-5 start in the first set to eventually take the contest 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5).

Medvedev Marches on

Daniil Medvedev marched into the semifinals on the back of another solid performance, this time in the quarterfinals against compatriot Karen Khachanov.

After both players held their serve over the first six games, Medvedev raced away with the opening set, breaking Khachanov twice and winning the last four games in a row.

But it was Khachanov, who started the second on a stronger note. The world no. 20 was the first to break in the set as he built a 3-1 lead, but he couldn’t hang on to the lead for long as Medvedev rebounded and then finished the second exactly the way he had finished the first.

The world no. 7 won the last five games in a row to complete a 6-3, 6-3 win in an hour and 18 minutes.

A 15-time winner on the tour, Medvedev won two titles from five finals last year. He will be disappointed, though, not to have won a big title. But the two-time Australian Open finalist will be eager to change things this season. His preparations for the Melbourne slam seem to be on course as he has begun 2023 in style.

Medvedev led Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (8-6), 2-1 in the first round, before the Italian was forced to retire from the contest.

In the second round, the Russian overpowered Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic 6-0, 6-3 in just an hour and eight minutes. He was equally impressive in his quarterfinal win over Khachanov on Friday. Can he now keep the rhythm going against Djokovic?

Djokovic v Medvedev Prediction and Tip

With two heavyweights (in good form) clashing in the semifinal, one can expect this to be a gruelling encounter. Djokovic himself believes it would be a “long night”. Three sets seem imminent. Djokovic will be a slight favourite as he has dominated the rivalry and has won the recent battles.
