Jaume Munar v Laslo Djere Head to Head

These two haven’t played each other before this at the highest level. They did play a couple of times on the Challenger circuit where Djere won both matches on clay.

Munar Coming off Pune Opening Loss

Munar has been tipped to be one of the players to watch out but his ascent to the top has been chequered with the 25-year-old having managed a career-best ranking of 52nd in the world so far. Currently he is 58th, with that ranking expected to fall a bit after his showing in Pune.

At the first season of the tournament in Pune, Munar crashed out in the first round to Tallon Griekspoor, losing in straight sets.

The Spaniard, up against a player ranked a good 37 places behind him, went down 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 32 minutes in a match where neither player went in as a clear-cut favourite.

With Munar’s performances on hardcourt surfaces not the best yet, it will be interesting to see how he goes up against a player who has beaten him twice on clay – his favourite surface!

Djere Shocked by Marterer

Like Munar, Djere enters this tournament having featured in the Pune Open but not having gone too far there. Unlike his opponent here though, Djere did win his opener.

The Serb, ranked 70th in the world, sent Alex Molcan packing in the first round, winning 6-2, 6-4 but couldn’t sustain that momentum in the second round. Playing Maximilian Marterer and starting out a 3/5 favourite, Djere was a straight-set casualty as he lost 7-6 (5), 6-2.

What is also not too different from Munar is the fact that Djere’s performances in hardcourt competitions aren’t much to write home about. Both his title victories on the ATP circuit and one of the two other runner-up trophies have come on clay.

There is one difference – Munar, very recently had made the final of the Winston-Salem Open, a tournament played on hardcourt surface. Can he take something positive out of it?

Munar v Djere Prediction and Tip

Munar might be higher-ranked but Djere, for us, starts off a favourite here and should edge his opponent out. Might need three sets though.
