Team USA has been on fire in the tournament and Taylor Fritz has played an important role in both singles and mixed doubles. While he is 3-1 in singles, he is 2-0 in mixed doubles in the tournament that has seen USA dominate all its four opponents so far.
In the group stages, the USA defeated the Czech Republic 4-1 and Germany 5-0 in Group C.
Fritz opened his campaign with 6-3, 6-4 win over Jiri Lehecka and a 6-1, 6-4 drubbing of Alexander Zverev in the group phases. He also partnered with Jessica Pegula to win the mixed doubles clash in the match against the Czech Republic.
Team USA carried its stunning form into the host city finals, trouncing Great Britain 4-1 in Sydney. While Fritz lost his singles match against Cameron Norrie in three sets, he paired with Pegula to win the mixed doubles contest. But that match was an inconsequential match for Team USA which had already qualified for the semifinal by then.
In the final four tie on Saturday, Team USA once again dominated its opponent, trouncing Poland 5-0. Fritz won the double again. He first eked out a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) win over Hubert Hurkacz and then won the mixed doubles rubber with Jessica Pegula to whitewash Poland.
Against Hurkacz, Fritz saved two set points in the first set before edging the tiebreak. He then ran away with the second set tiebreak to go 2-1 up in the head-to-head rivalry.

Berrettini Loses to Tsitsipas But Italy Qualifies
Matteo Berretini lost his first match of the tournament on Saturday, falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas in a thrilling three-setter. But despite the loss, Italy proved to be the stronger of the two sides, making the finals of the United Cup with a 4-1 win over Greece.
Berrettini had taken the first set with the only break of the set in the seventh game, but the world no. 4 roared back into the contest, winning the second set in the tiebreak and then getting the lone break of the final set in the seventh set to seal the contest 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
The defeat has been the only blemish for the World no. 16 in singles at the United Cup so far. He won both his Group stage matches in straight sets. First he defeated Thiago Monteiro 6-4, 7-6 as Italy beat Brazil 3-2. Then he outplayed Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4 as Italy handed Norway a 5-0 shellacking.
In the host city final in Brisbane, Italy lost to Poland 3-2 but it was Berrettini’s win over Hubert Hurkacz that proved vital in Italy clinching a spot in the semifinal as the best-placed losing finalists.
It was a three-set affair, that saw Berrettini thwart a comeback bid from Hurkacz to score a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
The loss to Tsitsipas was a jolt to him on Saturday, but he will be hoping for a change of fortune on Sunday when he comes up against Fritz.
